When does the event start and end?
The event will begin on 18th of July 2010 at 11 am and end at 5 pm.
Please leave the motorway on time and when planning your timetable please calculate how long it will take you to get to and from your table and/or a specific programme point by foot. Visitors who will be travelling along the "mobility side" on wheels are also requested to take into account how long it will take them to get to their preferred exit at the end of the day. You can find a map of the route here.
Where does the event route start and end?
The A 40 Ruhr motorway will be blocked off between the exit to Duisburg harbour (Duisburg-Häfen) all the way to Märkische Straße in Dortmund (the B1 major artery). Diversions will be announced and signposted in good time.
From when to when exactly will the motorway be blocked off?
The motorway will be blocked off from the evening of the 17th July 2010 at 10 pm. It must be open to motorised traffic once more on the 19th July 2010 at 5.00 am. Diversions will be announced and signposted in good time.
The event itself will take place between 11 am and 5 pm. The rest of the time will be completely needed for set up and dismantling work. For this reason we request that you leave the route on time in order to guarantee that the dismantling work can take place without any unnecessary delays.
Can I get food and drinks on the motorway?
There will be food and drink stands along the route to cater for all the participants.
EDEKA Rhein-Ruhr will have almost 100 lorries along the motorway to ensure adequate supplies. The EDEKA sales points will be on both sides of the motorway between Dortmund and Duisburg. You are also welcome to bring your own food and drink, of course. (No glass bottles!)
Am I allowed to bring food and drink?
It is basically allowed to bring food and drink. Please note that there are no water or electricity connections along the whole route. This means that it is not possible for you to prepare (e.g. to cook) meals on the spot. You are not allowed to bring containers made of glass on to the site because they are liable to break and cause injury. In addition, on safety grounds it is forbidden for anyone to light a barbecue.
Are there toilets and special toilets for the handicapped along the route?
Yes. They will be placed at regular intervals along the route.
Am I allowed to bring animals?
Because of the large number of visitors we recommend that you do not bring animals onto the route. It is forbidden to bring large animals like horses onto the road.
Am I allowed to sell anything?
It is generally forbidden to offer and sell goods or services on the route.
Will there be electricity on the route?
No. There will be no electricity and water connections along the whole route.
What is the precise length of the table?
2.20 metres long. 8-10 people can sit around the table.
May I bring more than 10 persons with me?
You are of course welcome to bring more than 10 persons with you. If you want to sit comfortably the table is really only suitable for between eight and 10 persons.
How do I get onto the motorway and/or find my table?
You can reach the event via the given official entrances and exits on the A40 motorway/B1 road. Please note the difference between the two sides of the motorway. The side of the motorway from Duisburg in the direction of Dortmund is the so-called "mobility" side. No pedestrians will be allowed here: only non-motorised wheeled traffic.
The side of the motorway running from Dortmund to Duisburg - the so-called "programme side" - is open to pedestrians. This side will contain the tables, the stages and other programmes. On your ticket you can find detailed information on the location of your table and the nearest entrance/exit, block, table number. To find your table please have a look at the local notice boards. You can get an impression of the route here.
We recommend you to use public transport if you only want to observe the activities on the table side of the motorway. But if you plan to also use the "mobility" side of the motorway, please note that you will not be able to use public transport because of the large number of expected visitors. You can find general information for visitors from abroad here.
Can I bring material to my table in advance?
Unfortunately the officials will not allow anyone onto the route before 11 am and after 5 pm. The same holds true for vehicles used for loading and unloading materials. Because of the tight time schedules it will not be possible to bring anything onto the route in advance.
Is there a map where I can get an overview to pinpoint the exact position of the table?
You can find a detailed map of the route here. There you can get information on the site of your block. The precise position of the table cannot be seen before the event. Signposts will be constructed on the site to help you get your bearings.
How far away from each other are the longest and shortest distances between entrances and exits, and where are they?
The longest distance is between Duisburg Homberg and Duisburg Häfen: 3.08 km.
The shortest walking distance between two points is between Dortmund-Wittekindstrasse and Dortmund-Lindemannstrasse: 0.3km.
How long are the longest and shortest entrances and exits?
The longest distance on the route is the exit from the table side in Heissen (ca. 1 km). The shortest entrances and exits are in Dortmund, e.g. Lindemannstrasse. Here, there is a direct access to residential areas.
Is there a map giving details about the distances in kilometres?
You can find a detailed map of the route here. It gives information on the site of your block. Distances in kilometres are based on the official distances in kilometres on the motorway.
Will there be a shuttle service to bring wheelchair users to their table?
No. There will be no motorised vehicles available for a shuttle service. Helpers will be provided at selected locations to support people with handicaps. We shall be giving more information on this point in the course of further planning.
Why do I need a table ticket?
A ticket gives the holder the right to take his or her place at the table during the event. Each ticket is assigned to a particular table. The table will be reserved for you between 11 am and 4 pm. The precise venue of your table will be marked on your ticket. A ticket is valid for one table only (the table includes two benches). A maximum of eight to 10 persons can be accommodated around a table. Unfortunately it is impossible to reserve individual places.
What does a table ticket cost?
It will cost you 25 € to reserve a table plus 1 € booking fee, 2.50 € pre-sales fee and 4.90 € for postage and packing (standard letter). The fee is for one table with two benches and not a fee per person. The benches can seat between eight and 10 persons. Tables may however be reserved for a lesser number of persons. Individual tickets will not be sold. If you have any questions on reserving a table ticket please contact the ticket hotline: +49 1805-15 2010.
How can I get table tickets?
The demand for table tickets is very high. In order to keep the allocation of tickets fair und transparent and enable as many persons as possible to reserve a table well in advance, the allocation of tables has been divided into three application phases.
The first two application phases are now closed. The third application phase will start on 18th May when tickets will be freely available from our pre-sales points. It is not necessary to apply for tickets in advance during the third phase. We shall be publishing a list of pre-sales points on this homepage very soon.
You can find further information on the procedure for the assignment of the tables here.
Who can I ask if I want to know more?
If you have any questions on table tickets please contact the ticket hotline: +49 1805-15 2010.
You can ask general questions on our E-Mail-form. Here you can get answers to any questions you might have on contributions to the programme and general questions on the event.
I have no desire to sit at a table. Can I take part anyway?
Yes, in any case. Even when you do not have a place at a table we warmly invite you to stroll along the "programme side" in the direction of Duisburg and enjoy all the activities going on at the tables and on the stages along the way. To do this, you are not required to make any application in advance.
Nor do you have to make an application in advance on the "mobility side" in the direction of Dortmund, if you simply wish to explore and enjoy the activities on wheels. Please note, however, that motorised vehicles of any kind are forbidden for safety reasons. The National German Cycle Club (ADFC) will be taking an active part along the motorway.
If I have had an application rejected, can I apply once more?
You have applied unsuccessfully for a table ticket to participate in the Still-Life project on 18th July 2010. A new sales phase starts on 18th May 2010 when tickets will be freely available for sale. We shall soon be publishing a list of pre-sales points on this homepage. This means you will have a further chance to get tickets and tables. During this sales phase it is not possible to apply for tickets in advance.
Can I also purchase a beer table and benches?
Yes.
A limited special edition of a beer table and 2 benches for the world's longest picnic can be ordered immediately from our project partner Hellweg: http://www.hellweg.de/ruhr2010-still-leben/.
A table and bench set costs 49.99 €. You can transfer the complete sum for the set, or pay an advance payment of 15.00 € and the remainder when you pick up the set. Following this you will received a voucher by post. After the event you can then pick up your set of a table and 2 benches by presenting your voucher at your nearby Hellweg branch
The table and bench sets cannot be picked up on the site on the day of the event.
Please note! Do not confuse this sales offer with the process of reserving a table on the A40 on the day of the event. Whether or not you reserve a table on the motorway, you can still purchase a special edition of a beer table and bench set.
Can I exchange my table with one at another location?
No. It is not possible to exchange tables because the locations of the tables are automatically laid down and therefore impossible to alter.
Unfortunately I will not be able to take part any more. Can I get a refund for my ticket?
We would be delighted if you would pass on your ticket to a friend or acquaintance. Unfortunately it is not possible for you to get a refund for an unused ticket.
What exactly will be taking place on the A40 motorway on the 18th July?
You can find a survey of the shows, performances etc during the event under Programme. We shall be regularly updating this. Please also note the community "Wir sind dabei" (only in German). Here ticket holders are already publishing the things they will be presenting on their programme.
What kind of programme should I present at my table?
By reserving a table you commit yourself to contribute to the cultural programme. You are utterly free to decide what you wish to present, so use your imagination and show us how creative you are! You can use your table from 11 am to 4 pm. Please take into account that no commercial activities are permitted whatsoever - not even for charitable purposes. Please give free rein to your creativity: you could for example sing with your choir, present some kind of sport or reveal some tips and tricks to do with your knitting club. Anything is possible!
A precondition for applying for a table is that you provide some details of the programme you intend to present.
How much space around my table am I allowed to use for my programme?
When you are making your plans, please note: people with tables can only use the benches and table for their programme activity. Escape and safety routes must be kept free along the route. For this reason large constructions are unfortunately not possible. Please note that along the whole route there will be no electricity and water connections. It is forbidden to sell products of any kind and use the tables for commercial purposes.
Do not indulge in electoral advertising or presentations with party-political content.
Can I bring along a gazebo or sunshade?
Gazebos and sunshades may only be placed directly next to or over your table because the route must be kept clear for first aid and safety officials and vehicles. In addition, you must ensure that any sunshades and gazebos are securely fastened to guarantee that they will not be blown away.
Are there any restrictions for my programme?
People with tables can only use the benches and table for their programme activities. Escape and safety routes must be kept free along the route.
Please note that along the whole route there will be no electricity and water connections.
It is forbidden to sell products of any kind and use the tables for commercial purposes.
When does my reservation begin and end?
The event begins at 11 am on the 18th of July 2010 when the route will be opened. Only then can visitors and participants enter the motorway area. Delivering articles to the table or decorating it beforehand is not possible. Your table is reserved for you from 11 am until 4 pm. You must have cleared everything away and left the motorway by 5 pm.
Please consider that no motorised vehicles will be allowed onto the motorway. When making your plans, please calculate the amount of time it will take to reach your table and/or the programme points by foot; and how long it will take you to leave the motorway. Visitors on the mobility side should also plan how long it will take them to get back. You can find a map of the route here.
When and how must I leave the table at the end of the event?
The table reservation ends officially at 4 pm. You must have cleared everything away and left the motorway by 5 pm. Please do not leave any rubbish on the route and take everything back home again. The motto is: avoid rubbish instead of clearing it away.
Please note that the motorway must be accessible to motorised vehicles at 5 am the following morning. Leave your table and place in the same state as you found it. Many thanks for your understanding and cooperation!
Please note that some of the project contents are still in the planning stage. We reserve the right to make changes. Current information on the project will be published on this website.
